## Who are Eastern Bankshares's competitors, and what are the alternatives?

Eastern's 2025 10-K, filed March 2, 2026, says its most direct deposit competition has come from banks in its primary market of greater Boston, southern New Hampshire and Rhode Island. In the Boston banking market, which held 91.2% of its deposits, Eastern had a 4.4% share at June 30, 2025, the fifth largest. FDIC data for the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro area show who is larger. Bank of America holds 17.35% of deposits from 115 offices, Citizens 10.73% from 150 and Santander 5.54% from 102, against Eastern's 3.81% from 99. TD Bank (3.39%) and Rockland Trust (2.24%) follow. The 10-K adds that some of the largest US banks have a growing presence in its market. JPMorgan Chase, which began operating in the Boston area in 2018, said in March 2026 it would grow from 92 to 100 Massachusetts branches. In commercial banking it names large regional banks, non-bank lenders and collateralized loan obligation managers as rivals. The 10-K is unusually direct about non-banks. It says fintechs have offered bank-like products, that regulators have shown a willingness to grant fintechs non-traditional charters, and that large technology companies are moving into financial services, some with lower costs because they have no branches.
