## Who are Capital One's competitors, and what are the alternatives?

Capital One competes on more fronts than most banks of its size because it is three businesses at once. In credit cards, where it was the largest US issuer by outstanding balances at December 31, 2025, its 10-K names issuers of Visa and Mastercard cards, American Express and private-label brands; Synchrony's 10-K lists Capital One/Discover beside JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, American Express, Bread Financial and Wells Fargo as its main rivals for retail card partners, and Walmart moved its card program from Capital One to Synchrony in 2025. In payments, the Discover acquisition (May 2025) made it a network owner competing with Visa and Mastercard: it moved about 25 million debit cards off Mastercard to the Discover network and is testing credit cards off Visa, though Visa's 10-K shows Diners Club/Discover at $253 billion of 2024 payments volume against Visa's $13.4 trillion. In deposits it fights direct banks and fintechs: Chime's 10-K names Capital One among its main competitors, alongside Ally and SoFi online. In auto lending it meets banks, credit unions and captive finance companies; in middle-market commercial banking, with about 1% share, it faces regional banks such as KeyBank and Western Alliance. Since buying Brex (closed April 2026) it also competes with Ramp, Mercury and American Express for business cards and spend software, the line where fintechs are the real rivals. ## What does Capital One say about its competition?

"Each of our business segments operates in a highly competitive environment, and we face competition in all aspects of our business from numerous bank and non-bank providers of financial services. Our Credit Card business competes with international, national, regional and local issuers of Visa® and Mastercard® credit cards, as well as with American Express®, private-label card brands and, to a certain extent, issuers of debit cards. In general, customers are attracted to credit card issuers largely on the basis of price, credit limit, reward programs, customer experience and other product features." ([Capital One via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927628/000092762826000024/cof-20251231.htm))

"Our Consumer Banking and Commercial Banking businesses compete with national, state and direct banks as well as with savings and loan associations and credit unions for loans and deposits. Our competitors also include automotive finance companies, commercial banking companies and other financial services providers that provide loans, deposits, and other similar services and products. In addition, we compete against non-bank institutions that are able to offer these products and services. As a result of our recent acquisition of the Global Payment Network, we now compete in the global payments industry, both with traditional competitors and new, emerging alternative payment providers. We also consider new and emerging companies in digital and mobile payments and other financial technology providers among our competitors." ([Capital One via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927628/000092762826000024/cof-20251231.htm))

"Our businesses generally compete on the basis of the quality and range of their products and services, transaction execution, innovation and price, and, with respect to our payment network businesses, the strength, reach, pricing and capabilities of our network offerings to merchants, acquirers and issuers. Competition varies based on the types of clients, customers, industries and geographies served. Our ability to compete depends, in part, on our ability to attract and retain our associates and on our reputation as well as our ability to keep pace with innovation, in particular in the development of new technology platforms." (Form 10-K for 2025, Item 1, filed February 19, 2026; Item 1A adds that it faces "strong and increasing competition in the direct banking market" and, in payments, competition with "certain network operators, such as Visa and Mastercard".) JPMorgan Chase reports a separate Commercial & Investment Bank segment. ## Common questions

### Who are Capital One's biggest competitors?

By line: in credit cards, JPMorgan Chase, American Express, Citigroup, Synchrony, Bread Financial and Wells Fargo, the issuers named alongside Capital One/Discover in Synchrony's 10-K; in payments, Visa, Mastercard and American Express; in deposits, direct and digital banks such as Ally, SoFi and Chime; in auto loans, Ally, credit unions and captive finance companies; and in business cards, Amex, Ramp and Mercury. Capital One's own 10-K names Visa, Mastercard and American Express explicitly. ([Synchrony Financial (SEC filing)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1601712/000160171226000006/syf-20251231.htm), [Capital One via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927628/000092762826000024/cof-20251231.htm), [Chime via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1795586/000179558626000013/chym-20251231.htm), [Ally Financial (SEC filings)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/40729/000004072926000005/ally-20251231.htm), [Payments Dive](https://www.paymentsdive.com/news/capital-one-acquire-brex-5-billion-fintech/810319/))

### Is Chime a competitor of Capital One?

Yes, by Chime's own account. Its 2025 10-K says it views its main competition as traditional banks, including Bank of America, Capital One, Citibank, J.P. Morgan Chase, PNC Bank and Wells Fargo, and also competes with online-only institutions such as Ally, Discover and SoFi. Capital One's 10-K, for its part, reports strong and increasing competition in the direct banking market. ([Chime via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1795586/000179558626000013/chym-20251231.htm), [Capital One via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927628/000092762826000024/cof-20251231.htm))

### Does Capital One compete with Visa and Mastercard now?

Yes. Buying Discover in May 2025 gave Capital One the Discover, PULSE and Diners Club networks, and its 10-K says it now competes with network operators such as Visa and Mastercard. It had moved about 25 million debit cards from Mastercard to Discover by July 2026 and is testing credit cards on Discover's rails, while its flagship Venture X card stayed on Visa. Discover's network remains far smaller: $253 billion of 2024 payments volume against Visa's $13,433 billion. ([Capital One via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927628/000092762826000024/cof-20251231.htm), [Payments Dive](https://www.paymentsdive.com/news/capital-one-discover-merger-acquisition-close-settlement-425-million-court-savings-account/748474/), [PaymentsJournal](https://www.paymentsjournal.com/after-moving-debit-cards-to-discover-capital-one-turns-to-credit-card-migration/), [U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (EDGAR)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1403161/000140316125000089/v-20250930.htm))

### How does Capital One compare with American Express for credit cards?

Both issue cards and own a network. Capital One was the largest US credit card issuer by outstanding balances at the end of 2025 and owns Discover and Diners Club; Amex is the fourth-largest general-purpose network by purchase volume and says it faces intense competition for premium customers and cobrand partners. On AI, Amex reports app search answering about one million inquiries a month, while Capital One's Eno publishes no usage figure. ([Capital One via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927628/000092762826000024/cof-20251231.htm), [American Express (SEC filings)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/4962/000000496226000080/axp-20251231.htm), [American Express](https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/newsroom/articles/financial-news/2026-chairman-s-letter-to-shareholders.html), [Capital One](https://www.capitalone.com/digital/tools/eno/))

### What are alternatives to Capital One for small business spending?

Capital One's own business-payments offer now includes Brex, acquired for $5.15 billion and closed on April 7, 2026. Businesses comparing options will meet American Express, JPMorgan Chase and fintechs such as Ramp, Mercury, Bill and Engine, which Payments Dive names as competitors for business card and spend-management customers. Ramp and Mercury both sell AI agents for expense review and financial operations. ([Capital One](https://www.capitalone.com/about/newsroom/capital-one-completes-acquisition-of-brex/), [Payments Dive](https://www.paymentsdive.com/news/amex-floats-first-new-business-card-in-7-years/815618/), [Payments Dive](https://www.paymentsdive.com/news/capital-one-acquire-brex-5-billion-fintech/810319/), [Ramp](https://ramp.com/blog/ramp-agents-announcement), [Mercury](https://mercury.com/blog/introducing-mercury-command))

### Who competes with Capital One in auto loans?

Capital One's 10-K names automotive finance companies, banks and credit unions among its competitors for loans. Ally, one of the largest auto lenders, says in its own 10-K that it competes in automotive financing with banks, credit unions, captive automotive finance companies and independent finance companies, and that captives hold exclusivity privileges with manufacturers. Capital One's dealer tools, Chat Concierge and ProtectID, are its AI answer in this line. ([Capital One via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927628/000092762826000024/cof-20251231.htm), [Ally Financial (SEC filings)](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/40729/000004072926000005/ally-20251231.htm), [Capital One](https://www.capitalone.com/tech/ai/future-of-ai-car-dealerships-shopping), [Capital One](https://www.capitalone.com/about/newsroom/capital-one-auto-unveils-real-time-fraud-detection-tool))

### Does Capital One offer mortgages?

Not as a reported business. Its 2025 10-K reports three segments, Credit Card, Consumer Banking and Commercial Banking, and treats the Discover home-loan business it acquired, then sold in the fourth quarter of 2025, as a discontinued operation. Banks such as JPMorgan Chase run home-lending units covering mortgage origination and servicing. ([Capital One via SEC EDGAR](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927628/000092762826000024/cof-20251231.htm), [JPMorgan Chase & Co.
