The EBA's September 25, 2025 report 'Rising application of AI in EU banking and payments sector' is the official snapshot of AI use in EU banks: 92% of EU banks are deploying AI and 8% are piloting or discussing use cases. Dominant uses are client profiling and clustering, creditworthiness assessment and credit scoring, AML/CFT and fraud detection, risk modelling, customer support and internal-process optimisation. Among surveyed banks, 55% already use general-purpose AI or agentic AI in consumer-facing processes, most commonly for fraud alerts, call-centre assistance, self-service guidance and digital or voice assistants.

## Key points

- Published September 25, 2025 as part of the EBA's digital finance factsheet series.
- 92% of EU banks deploy AI in production; 8% are pilot testing or discussing use cases.
- Observed use cases: profiling/clustering of clients and transactions; creditworthiness assessment and credit scoring; AML/CFT and fraud detection including remote onboarding and real-time transaction monitoring; risk modelling; customer support including chatbots; internal-process optimisation such as document summarisation and code generation.
- 55% of surveyed banks use GPAI or agentic AI in consumer-facing processes — fraud notifications, agent assist, self-service automation, FAQ tools, and digital/voice assistants.
- Internal GPAI uses: coding, summarising documentation, drafting legal, support and marketing documents.
- Drivers cited: staff productivity, process optimisation and better customer interaction, balanced against risks the EBA continues to monitor with market participants, consumer organisations and supervisors.

## What changed for banks

The report replaced anecdote with official numbers for EU AI adoption and put general-purpose and agentic AI in consumer-facing banking on the supervisory record for the first time. For banks it signals which use cases supervisors will look at first — credit scoring (high-risk under the AI Act), fraud/AML, and customer-facing GPAI — and it underpins the EBA's 2026–27 supervisory-convergence work.
