47 banks, 71 dated moves (January to March 2026): 23 in production, 4 rolling out, 8 pilots, 36 announcements. Most active: BNY (4), Amex (4), Santander (4), NatWest (4), OCBC (3).

## The quarter

In the first quarter of 2026, banks made 69 recorded moves on AI agents across 47 banks, led by BNY, Amex, Santander and NatWest with four each. Many were annual filings: JPMorgan on February 13, Capital One on February 19, Citi on February 20 and BofA on February 25 carried risk factors on agentic or autonomous AI. Zions said on February 24 it uses no fully autonomous AI in critical decisions or client-facing activities, and the new OCBC CEO said on February 25 that agentic AI may not be ready today.

In production, BNY reported 134 digital employees on January 13, and OCBC's March 10 annual report said an agentic source-of-wealth tool cut KYC work from up to 10 days to about one hour. Commonwealth Bank described threat-hunting agents on March 17 that assess emerging threats in 30 minutes instead of two days, and NatWest said on February 13 that agentic pilots were delivering 10x gains.

On payments, DBS became the first Asia-Pacific issuer to pilot Visa Intelligent Commerce on February 16, Santander completed Europe's first live agent payment with Mastercard on March 2, JPMorgan partnered with Mirakl on March 10, Barclays joined Visa Agentic Ready on March 17, and HSBC took part in Hong Kong's first live agentic transaction on March 27. At quarter end, Santander's goal of more than EUR 1bn of AI value by 2028, PNC's $1.5 billion of AI-addressable spend and the Lloyds agentic AI research program with the University of Glasgow were still announcements.
